Situated Holiday Accommodation in Crantock Village
The village of Crantock, Cornwall with its green, quaint thatched cottages and
peaceful atmosphere has many interesting walks. Large areas of
the parish are in the ownership of the National Trust, including
the beach, car park and the delightful cove known as Porth Joke
or Polly Joke. The Round Orchard in the centre of the village
may have been the site of an ancient Celtic chapel. More recently
it was used to round up stray livestock until claimed by the owners.
The beach and estuary of the Gannel River, which was a thriving
port in the 15th Century, is now a favourite haunt of the walker,
horse rider and naturist with an abundance of wildlife. Penpol
lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty for all age groups
to enjoy.
The Gannel
Penpol Farm nestles on the banks of the River
Gannel Estuary at Penpol Creek. The estuary forms the tidal outlet
for the River Gannel which rises mainly near the A30 west of Mitchell
and flows past Trerice, the Tudor House owned by the National
Trust. Although now a peaceful sanctuary for birds, the Gannel
was once a prolific boatyard with ships of up to 250 tons being
built. Iron ore was brought to the Gannel for shipment to Wales
and up until the 1890's the Gannel Estuary was a busy shipping
area transporting coal, fertiliser, limestone and earthenware
up to Trevemper. Penpol Creek was also used to barge limestone
and coal and a ruined limekiln can still be seen here. You can
still see the remnants of the Gannel's halcyon days with small
boats moored up here and there, often undergoing repairs. The
estuary also offers an opportunity to observe many species of
birds including redshank, greenshank, godwits and curlew, among
others. The constant tidal shifts provide ideal conditions for
a variety of vegetation, forming channels of mud where wading
birds feed on crabs and shellfish. Apart from simply admiring
the Gannel's beauty, there are also opportunities to go horse
riding, canooeing during high tide or taking a picnic and a relaxing
stroll to Crantock Beach, which can be accessed during low tide.
The Beach in Crantock Cornwall
Crantock Beach is approximately 400 metres walking
distance via Penpol Woods. It is a wide golden-sand beach which
stretches out between the headlands of East and West Pentire.
Along its northern edge is the tidal estuary known as the Gannel
(see above), which extends inland for about one mile. The beach
is backed at it's northeast side by an impressive range of dunes
which rise steeply before opening out into a grassy space known
as the Rushy Green. The beach is backed at the southwest end by
steep cliffs and although there can be tidal currents around the
estuary, Crantock Beach offers a number of shallow waters and
there are numerous rock pools and caves to explore. The beach
is ideal for families looking for a peaceful and tranquil place
to relax.
Newquay
Newquay Town Centre and Fistral Beach via the
Gannel river footbridge (tidal) is approximately 15-20 minutes
walk, by road approximately 3 miles. Situated on the rugged coastline
of North Cornwall, Newquay boasts some of the finest views in
our country of the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This dramatic coast
line offers unparalleled scenery, breathtaking walks, hidden bays
and coves for sun worship, exploration and real outdoors fun.
For the more adventurous, there is surfing, kite surfing, kayaking,
and coasteering to name but a few of the activities available.
The perfect natural conditions produce an ideal surfing coast,
which has tempted surfers from all over the world to visit Newquay
and try out the waves. As such, it is now widely regarded as the
surf capital of the UK and hosts the National Surfing Championships
every year on Fistral Beach.
